Are you brave enough to take my challenge?

I rode the subway at an ungodly hour today, I’m talking pre-rush hour ungodly. Usually I’m surrounded by napping laborers and the occasional finance professional. It’s normally a pretty dull ride.

But this morning, something interesting happened. As one of the finance types was leaving the train, her smartphone fumbled from her hands.  In slow-mo, a group of us watched as the phone fell, hit the floor, and bounced right into the gap between the car and the platform. She stood speechless in disbelief. Bottom jaws inside the car dropped.  The phone. Was. Gone.

Inside the subway car, a mild panic ensued. Several of us checked that our phones were still attached to our person.

I’ll bet, just in reading that, you panicked a little bit too.

Of course you did, that little device is your entire world.

Except its not.  It’s actually probably the thing standing between your current reality and the one where you are utterly absorbed in the brilliance of your life.  It’s the false reflection of everything that feels important but probably isn’t.

It was designed to keep you connected, but prevents you from connecting to yourself, your relationships and your deeper sense of meaning.

So in a season that celebrates connection, gratitude and celebration; I have a challenge for you.

DARE to DISCONNECT.

forgo your smart phone or other glowy screened device for large periods of your day.

spend time with yourself and those that you care about, without interruption.

wait until work hours to answer that Sunday afternoon email from your boss.

Do this, and you’ll watch your mind start to untangle, and that binding you so often experience will start to unwind.

You’ll also leave the room for you to step completely into the brilliance of your life.
